About the Challenge

The real reason behind my need and desire for extreme adventures, challenges and expeditions is not to show "how good I am". On the contrary, I want to show "how good I want to be".

In order to show "how good I want to be" I have to challenge myself and add my name to a handful of achievers list. I strongly believe that the "ultimate measure of a man" is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of "challenge and controversy".

God has given us the brains and hands to sail to new horizons and reach new dimensions and galaxies. So, I do. Every time that I reach new heights or cross a finish line I feel very special and unique, and I do thank God for giving me the strength and the opportunity to experience what most people cannot even imagine.

The pleasure of risk is in the control needed to ride it with assurance, so that, what appears dangerous to the outsider, is to the participant simply a matter of intelligence, skill, intuition, coordination- in a word, experience. Participating in extreme adventures and challenges is a paradoxically intellectual pastime, but with this difference “you have to think with your body”. Every move has to be worked out in terms of playing chess with your body. If I make a mistake the consequences are immediate, obvious, embarrassing, and possibly painful. For a brief period I am directly responsible for my actions. In that beautiful, silent world of mountains and oceans it seems to me worth a little risk.

If the conquest of a great peak, ocean or finishing an ultra-marathon brings moments of exultation and bliss, which in the monotonous, materialistic existence of modern times nothing else can approach, then this is what I am looking for. It is not the goal of grand alpinism to face peril, but it is one of the tests one must undergo to deserve the joy of rising for an instant above the state of crawling grubs. On this proud and beautiful tall mountain, ocean or ride I live hours of fraternal, warm and exalting nobility. Here for a few days I have ceased to be slave and have really been man.

Fear is not going to shrink me from my challenges.
I don't want to be mediocre.
I want to be bigger than life.
