What is Ocean Rowing?

Ocean rowing is an extreme sport for men and women with great tenacity and a will to succeed. The oceans throw many challenges and this sport can certainly be termed as dangerous.

What is the purpose of the expedition?

This expedition involves an Atlantic row world-breaking attempt; it is set up specifically to attempt to beat the 32-day barrier for rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.

What will it be like rowing the Atlantic on board a small boat?

This expedition will surely be a personal mental and physical challenge for all of us on board. While extremely physical, ocean rowing is widely recognized as 90% mental challenge.

Conditions aboard will not be comfortable, far from it. Crammed into a small boat with eight other adults and exposed to salt water and potentially extreme weather, the crew is likely to suffer from sleep deprivation, slow starvation as their bodies struggle and fail to replace calories, trepidation and seasickness.

During the first week at sea an ocean rower’s body will go into a form of shock as it adjusts to the new environment and unrelenting nature of the duties. Each crew member will row for two hours, then have two hours off – with the ninth shift offering a glorious four hour sleep in between – for the entire journey, non-stop!

Once we start, wind and current will prevent us from turning back for any reason. There is no support boat, and only one life raft as a last resort.

1. The fastest crossing of the Atlantic on the trade winds 2 route
2. A sub 30 day time – this is the 4 minute mile of ocean rowing
3. The longest distance travelled in 24h record
4. The most consecutive days rowing over 100 miles.

Why did you decide to row across the Atlantic Ocean?

Some might echo George Mallory’s sentiment about Mt. Everest, “Because it’s there!”

I decided to row across the Atlantic Ocean because of the following six reasons (not necessarily in order of importance): (1) to treat myself with a life challenge, (2) to add my name to a handful of finishers list, (3) to experience a great achievement, (4) to raise money for charities related to autism and poverty, (5) to become the first Greek that rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, (6) to break the 32-day barrier for rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.

What is required for the expedition to materialize?

Most team members, including myself, are seeking sponsorships to cover the costs of the expedition and are simultaneously raising funds for their preferred philanthropic causes. The total cost of individual participation in this challenge is approximately $27,000 for each crewmember, and includes:
  • Crewing fees
  • Flights to/from entry/exit countries
  • Accommodation and subsistence costs while on land at either end
  • Communications expenses while aboard
  • Sustenance and specialist clothing while aboard

What is autism? Why are you racing for autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and in some instances repetitive behaviors. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age.
Autistic societies and organizations around the world fund research on effective methods for earlier diagnosis, as early intervention with proven behavioral therapies can improve outcomes. Increasing autism awareness is also key to better managing individuals with ASD at the society level. Further, because of the increased needs of persons with ASD, families need all the support they can get (monetary and otherwise).
I have lived in less developed nations where awareness on ASD is very limited and I know first-hand how important it is to support local organizations actively involved in autism awareness and research, and I am thus extremely sensitized to this cause.

Gold sponsors have the unique opportunity to strengthen their company’s social responsibility by participating in the charity drive embedded in the rowing across the Atlantic Ocean journey.

Sponsors may also choose their own charity and/or social cause and make it the cause for an expedition. In such a case, besides their sponsorship contributions, they will be expected to make a contribution to their selected charity. Marketing and advertising opportunities related to this initiative will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.


Bronze Sponsor (Individual: $25 and up)

Individuals who are willing to help in this endeavor may offer their contributions starting at $25. Funds exceeding expedition costs will be used to support my cause, specifically the Autistic Societies of Canada, Greece, and Trinidad and Tobago. Individual sponsors will receive the following benefits:
  • My personal thanks and assurance that I will put your contribution to good use.
  • Access to and right to use any material related to the expedition from the rower’s website and other social media as you deem fit.
The rower is also open to discussing individual desires as they may pertain to this expedition.


Silver Sponsor (Corporate or Individual: $1.000 and up)

Silver sponsors are entitled to the following:
  • A professionally written editorial article of 500-800 words will be provided, highlighting your sponsorship, for you to publish wherever you wish.
  • The rower will also have a personal collection of pictures from the whole expedition and a video of the transatlantic adventure. The sponsor will have access and right to use this footage and photographs in their promotional material.


Gold Sponsor (Corporate or Individual: $5.000 and up)

Gold sponsors are entitled to the following:
  • The company logo will be on the rower’s T-shirt prominent for the whole duration of the expedition.
  • A professionally written editorial article of 500-800 words will be provided, highlighting your sponsorship, for you to publish wherever you wish.
  • Press photos of crew standing in front of boat and wearing your branded T-shirt (to be paid for separately).
  • The rower will also have a personal collection of pictures from the whole expedition and a video of the transatlantic adventure. The sponsor will have access and right to use this footage and photographs in their promotional material.
  • The sponsor is entitled to use the rower (Dr. Ardavanis) as a spokesperson and/or motivational speaker for internal company events and press conferences.
  • The sponsor is entitled to request the production of a TV ad or other audiovisual material based on the expedition to use in their advertising campaign. Such requests will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Strategy and content for a month-long bespoke PR and marketing campaign produced in cooperation with your own marketing teams.
